Political theory is the study of ideas and theories about politics and political life. Normative political theory is particularly focused on critiques of political life and the concepts and theories relevant to making such critiques and developing alternatives. This lecture offers an introduction to normative political theory through a survey of classic and more recent works in political theory and philosophy. We will focus on the diversity of writings in important traditions that have influenced or interpreted recent and contemporary political developments. The traditions include liberalism, Marxism, feminism, and anti-racism/anti-colonialism.
The language of the lecture will be English and the assignments, which are required for the Teilnahmeschein, must be written in English.
